The original title of this book says it best: the education of a horseplayer. Simply put, the more educated a handicapper you are, the better your chances at winning at the track. Learn the racing game from one of the legends of the sport: Sam "The Genius" Lewin, and walk away from the track with a fatter wallet too!

The best sports wagering help around

Fantastic details on Provincial Sports Lottery betting!
The Winning Strategy is a book that is long over due! I love to play the Provincial Sports Lottery, but it is hard to win without inside knowledge. Al J's Sports REALLY tells you everything that you need to know about PSL betting in this book. By far, it is the best $20 that I ever spent! The only thing is, it is so detailed that you really need to read it twice. It's worth your effort!

Start at the Beginning
Ainslie writes with wit, grace, clarity, and conviction. That he is the acknowledged master of handicapping theory in his generation is also significant. His gentle humor and dignity is unmatched in today's handicapping writers. If you are new to horse racing and paramutuel betting, you can do no better than starting with the best.

Motivational and Fun Golf Games
Leave it to Chi Chi to make a great game even more entertaining. Here is a great collection of games for singles, groups, even tournaments to enhance one's outing and even provide competition while on the range.

For instance, there's an outing format called Tombstone where each player is given target score (3/4 handicap) and when that score is reached, stop there and mark it with tee and paper showing he reached that. Player that gets furthest wins.

Or Bucket, a driving range competiton awarding points for accuracy with the longest club.

Great fun stuff with wide variety, and improvement hints throughout by a golfer we all know works hard at his game, but has fun doing it.

Explains the science behind the term
This book explains the science and mathematics of "Wager Value" like no other. After reading this excellent book you will understand why the secret of handicapping is NOT determing the horse most likely to win and then betting on that horse (and you will learn Dick's number one rule... "no value, no bet"). As a student of probability I found this work top notch and consider it one of the most overlooked handicapping books ever published. ...it is worth every penny.

Dave Litfin's Expert Handicapping: Winning Insights into Betting Thoroughbreds
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (September, 1995)
Author: Dave Litfin
Amazon base price: $28.00
Used price: $5.50
Average review score:

Very well written, useful esp. for NYRA tracks
Litfin has written a very good book that contains much useful information. Most of the examples in the book are from races at Aqueduct, Belmont, and Saratoga. Litfin also devotes a fair amount of space to the "sheets". If you use Ragozin or Thoro-gragh data, this book is definitely for you. If you play races in New York extensively, this book will give you a greater insight into the three tracks operated by the New York Racing Association.

The Dogs: A Personal History of Greyhound Racing
Published in Paperback by Chatto & Windus (October, 1994)
Author: Laura Thompson
Amazon base price: $22.95
Average review score:

Give The Dogs five bones - !
This is not just a history of greyhound racing, it is a deeply moving personal insight into Laura Thompson, her love for dogs and her love for the father who owned and raced them. The book is Fever Pitch with heart; I wept buckets reading the damn thing. It is full of compassion for the greyhounds who run in the name of business and sport, and full of guilt for the fact that they give so much pleasure while being used, all too often, as playthings. It is also a journey into a completely separate world of which I hitherto knew nothing, and which came wonderfully alive for me. I found this book by accident in a second hand shop and couldn't help myself from wanting to say something about it - it is really beautiful.
