Poor Characters, Good location
I live locally in Pacific Grove, where this story takes place. I hate to give a poor review of local writers but my sense of fair literary practice overrides any favoritism I might feel for locals. Either you have a good book, or you don't. This is not a very well written book. The characters are inconsistent in the beginning, their are HUGE gaps in the storyline (why did the woman with cancer up and commit suicide when there were no outward signs of severe depression?) and generally poor story development. That being said, the locations that the authors speak of are interesting (especially to those of us who know where they are) and that is what tended to shine through, not the characters themselves. Although I think some will find this book entertaining (especially those within the medical marijuana field and the elderly person who knows that life doesn't end at retirement).

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Goodnight
Like an aging jogger who needs a little time to work through arthritis-stiffened joints, this story and its characters take a while to hit their stride. The lives of the leads initially appear in languid slo-motion, but then a dying cancer patient, Rita Rich, finds she gets by with a little help from her old friends. Their quest for "medicinal marijuana" for Rita and her new friends is quite a caper! As one of these dope procuring grannies, self-dubbed "Politely Passive Terrorists," exhorts: There's more to life than thrift shops and weekly bingo games -we're going beyond bingo!
It's a fun trip for all. Reviewed by TundraVision

Friendship, Humor, and Compassion
The "introductory horoscope" to this book states "Life will be unpredictable. That doesn't mean BAD unpredictable, simply irreverent toward your plans. Under the circumstances, the best way to prepare for it might be to imagine what it would be like keeping your balance while hula-dancing on the hood of a moving car." This is truly an appropriate beginning for this witty caper among three friends who inadvertantly find themselves a little over their heads trying to help a sick friend. Hilarity ensues amidst bongo brownies, a surprise in a storage locker, and adventures run amok - all driven by the questioning of society's rules and the warmth and compassion of friendship. Laugh a lot, cry a little, and have fun with this one.

Interesting book
Interesting book but don't let the upper management catch you with it.

Is a bit of a passing fad though.

Good Job!
Good Job

An eyeopening view to our daily buisness jargon.
Dry, never ending, buzzword-idiots usually turn the boardroom "Daily" into a yawn-athon. Tired of trying to decypher the latest "Achrobuzzum"? I was, so I looked for an answer. I found it in the form of "The Buzzword BINGO Book". This book not only answered aukward research "buzzword bombshells" but took the parody of boardroom venacular to new levels of hilarity. A must for the soul of every; Boardroom, Power-Luncher, or After-hours participant, or just to stay informed... Either way, it brings another bit of fun in the day's "Race"... it sure did for me...

Bits are wonderful, but still my least favorite of Erdrich's
Erdrich's novels are all about the same characters and setting, and people and stories overlap and intertwine. But this is the only novel that doesn't feel complete in and of itself. Parts of the book are simply wonderful--particularly, Lipsha's account of how he came to get a tatoo. Worth the price of admission for that story alone--but still, for an Erdrich fan, a bit of a disappointment.

Unexpected enjoyment in an off-the-wall world
I had not expected to like this book... when I began it, I was sure that I would have to force myself to the end because I tend to like the romantic happily-ever-after sort of story, but once I began, Erdrich caught me in the absurdities of the world of Lipsha. I have read many reviews that do not find Lipsha an especially likable character, but I liked him despite the fact that he was the sort who would instinctively choose the wrong way to do anything. The sheer absurdity of Erdrich's work, including a food fight in Dairy Queen between romantic rivals, a vision quest that brought forth a talking skunk, and a ghostly mother who wanted the T-bird that her insurance money bought, adds just enough humor to make even the defeats of Lipsha amusing rather than tragic. The book is worth a try, especially if seen in terms of Lipsha's returning home to find the kinship with the land that he had lost -- a slow healing process. The skunk tells him, "It ain't real estate," and at the base of all the other adventures he begins to realize this, but as with so many young people, the discovery is slow coming and fraught with disasters

A good book for young students
This is the first book read to us by Mrs. Marion Congdon in 4th grade. She'd read one chapter every other day if our work was done. A good mystery novel full of intrigue, recommended for students in grade school.

The Marranos of Spain: From the Late 14th to the Early 16th Century According to Contemporary Hebrew Sources)
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (June, 1999)
Authors: B. Netanyahu, North Dakota Geo Bingo 38 Must Know S, and Jeremy Black

Christians or Apostates?
The Marranos of Spain is a landmark study for this period of Spanish history and the Jews of Spain. Its importance lies within the utlized sources, which for the first time in the scholarly research of Marranos, someone is intelligent enough to integrate Hebrew sources, religous as well as secular, in order to have a better picture.

However, Netanyahu's analysis leaves much to be desired. The debate about his analysis and contradictions have been discussed in Spanish Academia, and they are mainly due to some of the second or third sources he has utilized which are not reliable. Even his discussion of Jewish jurisprudence falls short when considering he's mixing two Jewish traditions (Spanish and German) in regards to forced converts, traditions that had not been merged in 15th century Europe. He tried to use all that he could to prove his thesis that the forced converts were truly sincere Christians, and in this process he purposely dismissed the psycological and socio-antropological analysis of this period. Basically what Netanyahu did was to find sources that said "black," and so black it was. He missed much on the complexity of this period.

As a pioneering work for the use of Hebrew sources, Netanyahu's work is most excellent, but again, he needs to revise many of his forced conclusions.

A Winning Hand is in THE QUEEN OF BINGO!
What a terrific little play about everything from bingo to life in general. It's amazing to read this play as the characters come right off the page. It's very interesting how you read this play and totally relate to the characters and they reminded me of people I am related to or know of... SIS and BABE are very colorful characters. Of course BABE is my favorite... I highly recommend this play. It looks like it would be an easy one to put on as it can be done with just a table and two chairs... great for small theatres all over...

after a few weeks he breaks his pencil so he could find out what the three gurls that he likes are writing about till he does it so much that the teacher finds out what bingo is doing.
Then a few weeks later a kid wears a shirt that the princpal doesn't like, so the princpal made a a rule that if you wear a shirt with letters on it he will send them home. After ever thing ends Bingo finds out that what he did was write and that he won the rule over the letters on the shirt.

There's no one else like Bingo Brown!
I read this book more than 10 years ago in elementary school. It was such a memorable experience that I bought a copy of it recently. Its quite charming - funny and serious at times. Bingo Brown reminds me of one of those kids from the Francois Traffaut film Argent de poche (Small Change). I would recommend it for 4th-6th graders and to those grown-ups who remember that they were children first.
