Of course, I wrote the book.

This is a really interesting and funny book
My late father was a bookie in his younger days so I could relate to the story better than most. Dad purchased a copy of this when it came out in the 1970's and laughed all the way through it.

Some of the sports references are dated now (the book is about 30 years old) but a realistic insight into a bookmaker's life and incredibly funny. The writer has a great style and really enjoyable.

I bought a new copy and re-read recently. Glad I did. ...

Motivational and Fun Golf Games
Leave it to Chi Chi to make a great game even more entertaining. Here is a great collection of games for singles, groups, even tournaments to enhance one's outing and even provide competition while on the range.

For instance, there's an outing format called Tombstone where each player is given target score (3/4 handicap) and when that score is reached, stop there and mark it with tee and paper showing he reached that. Player that gets furthest wins.

Or Bucket, a driving range competiton awarding points for accuracy with the longest club.

Great fun stuff with wide variety, and improvement hints throughout by a golfer we all know works hard at his game, but has fun doing it.

Commonsense Betting

Explains the science behind the term
This book explains the science and mathematics of "Wager Value" like no other. After reading this excellent book you will understand why the secret of handicapping is NOT determing the horse most likely to win and then betting on that horse (and you will learn Dick's number one rule... "no value, no bet"). As a student of probability I found this work top notch and consider it one of the most overlooked handicapping books ever published. ...it is worth every penny.

Dave Litfin's Expert Handicapping: Winning Insights into Betting Thoroughbreds
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (September, 1995)
Author: Dave Litfin
Amazon base price: $28.00
Used price: $5.50
Average review score:

Very well written, useful esp. for NYRA tracks
Litfin has written a very good book that contains much useful information. Most of the examples in the book are from races at Aqueduct, Belmont, and Saratoga. Litfin also devotes a fair amount of space to the "sheets". If you use Ragozin or Thoro-gragh data, this book is definitely for you. If you play races in New York extensively, this book will give you a greater insight into the three tracks operated by the New York Racing Association.

The Dogs: A Personal History of Greyhound Racing
Published in Paperback by Chatto & Windus (October, 1994)
Author: Laura Thompson
Amazon base price: $22.95

Give The Dogs five bones - !
This is not just a history of greyhound racing, it is a deeply moving personal insight into Laura Thompson, her love for dogs and her love for the father who owned and raced them. The book is Fever Pitch with heart; I wept buckets reading the damn thing. It is full of compassion for the greyhounds who run in the name of business and sport, and full of guilt for the fact that they give so much pleasure while being used, all too often, as playthings. It is also a journey into a completely separate world of which I hitherto knew nothing, and which came wonderfully alive for me. I found this book by accident in a second hand shop and couldn't help myself from wanting to say something about it - it is really beautiful.

best longshot selection book
This is one of the few handicapping books over the years that I can always read again and again. It offers real solid methods for selecting winners and also hidden longshots. I've used his methods for years at various tracks and Vegas and am continually amazed that they still work. If your lucky enough to obtain an out of print copy, I'm sure you'll find it facinating reading. It also offers some by gone era rememberances of racing. I would list this as must reading for any racing fan. Enjoy and good handicapping.

How Professional Gamblers Beat the Pro Football Pointspread
Published in Plastic Comb by Flying m Group (01 June, 1997)
Author: J. R. Miller
Amazon base price: $34.95
Average review score:

A real bible of sports betting.
This is by far the best source I've encountered for tips on sports betting. Miller is a real professional sports bettor-- not one of those phonies who promise 90% locks, he understands the real nature of the game and explains it in a simple, straightforward manner perfect for novices and experts alike.

The first section of the book explains some of the basics of sports betting with a good explanation of what it takes to win. Most of the rest of the book specifically addresses betting on the NFL game and how to beat it, including a valuable money-making betting system.

There are also two chapters in the book dealing with money management, which explain how important this aspect of sports betting is. The information here dispels a number of myths regarding money management and can be applied to any sport. Of all of the great lessons in the book, these may be the most eye-opening and what makes you the most money.

If you are serious about learning about sports betting, this book is an unbeatable investment.

good book on sports betting
This book isn't full of any get rich quick schemes but it gives you good strategies to making your own lines and understanding better how the lines are made. This book covers the 5 major sports with different strategies specific to each sport. I would suggest this book especially if you can get it used really cheap like I did. Definitely worth the [money]! Very interesting read.
